From Russia with Love…
For those who don’t know, Javier’s series From Russia with Love, was among the few chosen as winner for the 2009 Applied Arts Award for Photography/Illustration.
“This shoot was done using original and vintage Russian military apparel. The idea was to rid them from all their political baggage, and instead allow them to be just objects, used in a humorous, light, and beautiful way. Ugly pretty things from Russia with Love.” – Lovera
Along with his fellow recipients work, check out the award winning series at the Applied Arts Winners Exhibition on November 6th, 10 to 3, at Studio 1 (9 Davies Avenue, Suite 201).

The Opti-Collective

Urban barriers are everywhere. Seriously, walk down Spadina and count how many people have intentionally placed something –a cell phone, iPod, sunglasses—between themselves and you: the faceless stranger. It’s in this light that photographer Jalani Morgan’s ‘Safety Glasses’ series uses an old pair of construction glasses in order to deconstruct big city stoicism. Adding a ‘weird layer of approachable nerd’, the glasses instantly transform the subject from a source of social threat into your new best friend. The wearer becomes member of the tribe of effortless cool, reminding us that, not only are we part of the global collective, but that we’re all hopeless geeks inside.

Steve Carty Shoots Love and Electrik
Last week i had the pleasure of meeting and shooting Vancouver’s own, Love & Electrik. Roxanne (Love) and Kevin (Electrik) were amazing to work with. I was pretty inspired after seeing them the night before open for Keys and Krates at Circa nightclub, downtown Toronto. Their show was great, it was the first time they have been here so it was big for them to start the Toronto stay with a gig a Circa and a pretty energetic photo shoot. Take a minute to watch this great behind the scenes video of my shoot with Rox and Kevin at Hermann & Audrey headquarters.
Carty.
